Behunin Nativity Bowls

We discovered the ceramic artwork of artist Ben Behunin at a shop near St. George, Utah. We wanted more and were pleased to discover that his studio is in Salt Lake City, so we stopped by. His workshop is filled with amazing, imaginative creations, but we were excited to discover that every year he makes a nativity bowl. It was hard to decide which we liked best, so we bought two!

Mother of Pearl Panorama Nativity

This spectacular piece is made of mother of pearl, the smooth, shining, iridescent substance forming the inner layer of abalone shells. The mother of pearl is cut into thin layers and then carved to make the nativity figures. This panorama is reminiscent of a cathedral, with arches, steps and inset panels depicting important moments in the nativity of Jesus Christ.

  • On the left is the Annunciation to Mary when an angel told her she would give birth to our Savior, the Son of God
  • In the middle is the nativity, with the traditional shepherds and kings
  • On the right is the Crucifixion of Christ
  • Topping the panorama is the resurrected Christ in glory

This panorama was originally purchased in Bethlehem in the 1970’s by a Catholic priest. It was a treasured part of his collection until this year, when he sold it on eBay to help finance his retirement. We were happy to contribute to his retirement fund and add this piece to our collection!
